Update April 17, 2021: Nearly 140 Million COVID-19 Cases in the World

There are nearly 140 million cases of COVID-19 in the world, or to be precise 139.6 million cases. The number is up about three million cases from the beginning of this week.

Based on data from Johns Hopkins University, Saturday (17/4/2021), the following is a list of countries with the highest cases of COVID-19:
United States: 31.5 million cases

2. India: 14.2 million

3. Brazil: 13.8 million

4. France: 5.2 million

5. Russia: 4.6 million

In total, 2.99 million patients died related to COVID-19. Patients recovered reached 79.5 million.

Turkey’s cases are already close to the top five with a total of 4.1 million cases. In the UK, the total cases are 4.3 million.

Currently, Indonesia is ranked 19th in the world with 1.59 million cases. Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases in China is 102 thousand people.

The CEO of Pfizer, Albert Bourla, predicts that a person needs a third dose of vaccination to the annual vaccination against COVID-19. Bourla says that scenario is entirely possible.

He said the COVID-19 variant will be key to this.

“Very probably it will take a third dose of around six and 12 months, and from there there will be an annual revaccination, but all that needs to be confirmed,” Albert Bourla told CNBC, quoted Friday (16/4).

Bourla’s comments came after Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky said it is likely that people need vaccinations every year, such as the annual flu shot.

Researchers still don’t know how long it will take to protect the COVID-19 vaccine after a person has received a complete vaccine. More data is needed to determine the protection period.

Pfizer and Moderna say their vaccine can protect against serious illness for up to six months after the second dose.
