A twin sister in Japan is now billionaires after their company that makes mobile games for girls hit the stock market.

The joint stock of Anna and Mizuki Nakajima in Coly, the company they founded, was worth around 15.2 billion yen (Rp2 trillion) when it was launched last week.

The company makes anime-based games aimed at women and nearly three-quarters of its 200 employees are women.

The company’s special genre is called “otome”, Japanese for girl.
Games by Coly’s company, which include Stand My Heroes and Promise of Wizard, are free to download but players can pay to unlock additional storylines.

Otome’s followers tend to be very loyal and willing to defend the title for long periods of time, Serkan Toto, an analyst at Japanese game consultancy Kantan Games, told the BBC.
Club for boys
Given that less than 5% of software companies in Japan are led by women, the game industry is being dubbed the “men’s club” and the story of the Nakajima twins is “very unusual,” added Toto.

“The Nakajima twin duo are doing an amazing job growing their company so fast in a very competitive industry.”
Business experts say it is still not easy to find one’s own path as a woman in the Japanese business world, having to overcome challenges that men would not face if faced with the same situation.

“The company never took venture capital, which is certainly a much easier route to take in Japan for men,” added Toto.
Anime gold mine
The popularity of Japanese style animation better known as anime has grown over the years, especially in the United States, China, and South Korea

A report by US-based consultancy Grand View Research assessed the anime market at $ 20.5 billion and estimates it will grow by about 9% a year through 2025.

Netflix says more than 100 million households worldwide watched at least one anime title on its platform between October 2019 and September 2020, a figure that has increased by more than 50%.

The video streaming entertainment service site has signed numerous deals with anime producers to create content.

Sony is also a major supporter of anime content and its annual profits have been a big boost from the success of its hit anime film, Demon Slayer.

This film became the fastest film in the history of Japanese cinema last year, taking only 10 days to generate 10 billion yen.
